1. Photo problems
Shadows, glasses, dark or patterned backgrounds and photos that aren’t square are the most common issues. See the photo rules.
2. Details that don’t match
Your name, date of birth and passport number must match your passport exactly, including middle names.
3. Indian e-Visa refused because you weren’t eligible
People of Pakistani origin and anyone with a military or police background need a regular visa. Applying for an e-Visa anyway usually ends in a refusal and a lost fee.
4. Missing documents
Business visas need a business card or invitation, medical visas a hospital letter, and so on. Check what your e-Visa needs before you apply.
5. Previous refusals not declared
If you’ve had a visa refused before, for India or anywhere else, say so on the form. Leaving it out can lead to a refusal even if everything else is right.
What to do if your Indian e-Visa is refused
There’s no appeal, but you can apply again once the problem is fixed. If an e-Visa isn’t right for you, apply for a regular visa instead. Send us your refusal email and we’ll work out the likely reason and help you reapply. Read our full guide.
